Pine Wood Derby

Are you ready to race? February 19, 2011 9:00 the fun begins. Please remember that to be eligible to represent the pack in the San Diego 500 at the Scout Fair in April, the car must be built from the parts in the parts in the official BSA Pine Wood Derby Kit and qualify for racing based on the judgement of the Derby Committee.

The track will be set up by 9:00 and a tume up table will be available for last minute modifications to the cars (only basic tools and supplies will be available). Final weigh in starts at 9:30, Judging of cars against themes begins at 10:30 immediately followed by the races.

At 9:00 cars can be sent down the track. Accurate times may not be available at all times before racing begins. Once a car has qualified, and been checked in it will be inacessable to the scouts until it has completed racing, no more modifications will be permitted. Exceptions may be made if problems occur during the races at the discression of the Derby Committee.

If a car does not qualify, if there is adequate time before 10:30, the opportunity will be provided to correct the reason for failing to qualify. Most of the criteria the car will be qualified against are listed in the instructions in the kit. Other than alternate official BSA wheels, substitution of parts may be suficient reason to disqualify a vehicle. If working exclusively with the kit parts, the height width length and weight are the key items to watch.

The scale used at the derby will be the official scale. Any measurable fractional gram over 5 grams will be reason to disqualify a car if the weight can not be corrected before 10:30.

At the discression of the Derby Committee some cars that did not qualify at check in may be allowed to race. Depending on the reason the car does not qualify, the car might not be allowed to race on the track. If a car does not qualify, and can not be adequately modified to meet qualification criteria, you will be informed before the car is checked in. If a car does not qualify, even if it can not race on the track, it can still be judged for the themes to be announced at the derby.

Lunch will be served after the races and awards ceremony (probably around 12:00).

The format of the race may vary slightly, but the plan is to have the pack randomly split into two heats. The top 4 cars from each heat will move to the finals with a wild card car being pulled from one of the heats. Each scout’s car will participate in at least three races. If times can not be accurately determined (it has happened on a number of occasions in past years) alternate methods of determining best performance will be used based on the judgement of the derby committee.
